What is biometrics?

Biometrics uses your unique physical or behavioural traits to identify you: fingerprints, facial recognition, iris, voice, gait, even the rhythm of your typing. This data is increasingly used for authentication and identification.

Risks specific to biometric data

Unlike a password, you cannot change your fingerprints or your face if the data is compromised. A biometric data breach is therefore permanent. This data can also be collected without your knowledge, as with facial recognition in public spaces.

Legal framework and regulation

In Canada and Quebec, biometric data is treated as sensitive personal information that needs stronger protection. Law 25 sets strict obligations for organizations that collect it. The European GDPR also classifies biometrics as sensitive data.

How to protect yourself

Limit biometric authentication to essential devices and services. Read privacy policies to understand how your biometric data is stored and protected. Prefer systems that process biometrics locally on your device rather than in the cloud.

Your biometric data is unique and permanent. Protect it as you would protect your identity itself.
